Newtritionsavvy Gym Favorites

I don’t know about you guys but I am OBSESSED with this new Athleisure movement. I know working out has always been a thing but it seems like now more than ever it’s all about that style you posses in the gym. As my body has changed quite a bit over the last few years I have come to discover items that I probably would never have worn before (crops etc). I used to swear by Lululemon only (which I still do on some products) but I will say that I have branched out in other areas. The items above are just a few of my favorite things when it comes to the gym! As you have probably noticed I love black and grey clothes – I think thats just the neutral tone lover inside of me but it always works no matter how I am feeling! 🙂
1. Nike – These products never get old. I swear by Nike only for a training shoe. The key is finding one that works for you. I have these Zooms and I LOVE them for my time in the gym. Along with their shoes I love Nike athletic wear as well. I think it’s important not just to wear brands but know what the company stands for. I support their mission 100% and apply that into my training mentality every single time I workout.
2. Lululemon BRA – Ok let me just say there is NOTHING in the world better than a Lululemon sports bra. I have a pretty large cup size and I have my whole life. There was a time in which I would wear a regular bra as well as a sports bra (I know, this is kind of mortifying now that I am thinking about it) until I discovered the Ta Ta Tamer sports bra. The durability is not comparable to any other kind. I have had all of mine for about 5 years and they are still in brand new condition. I am not exaggerating either!!! They have since come out with the Enlite Sports Bra which does have a hefty price tag, but from personal experience I can vouch it is more than worth it.
3. Swell – These water bottles are great. The are insulated for both cold or hot water and their main mission is to rid the planet of water bottles. How many of us are guilty of consuming too many water bottles? This company is sustainable as well as an all women owned company!
4. Notebook – I like to have a journal of some sort to keep track of my workouts. It helps me in the future if I don’t have time to make it to the gym or to remember when it is exactly that I worked out.
5. Lucy Studio Hatha Legging  – These for me are by far the best pant I have come across in my lifetime. I was never a fan of Lucy before #1 because I was too busy spending all my money at LuLu but also because the athletic line seemed like it was for the older woman. A couple years ago I was at Stanford Shopping Center and made my way in just to browse. I tried on my first pair of Studio Hatha Leggings and from then it was history. I have really long skinny legs (not complaining) but most of the time pants don’t fit my waste and ankles proportionately. They are either too tight on the hips or too loose on my ankles. This for me is the PERFECT fit pant. I wear them both to workout and to lounge.
These are just a few of my favorite items. Do you have any “swear by” items that I need to know about!?

Better For It.

It’s no surprise that if you put in the work, you get results. An easy way to keep yourself accountable is to workout with someone that will push you to the limit you don’t even see for yourself. You MUST lift the heavier weight, do the extra sprints post workout, experience what it means to become uncomfortable because getting results is not always comfortable. (I can vouch for that!)There is no such thing as shortcuts, wraps, cleanses, or anyone that is going to create real results for you if you don’t change your lifestyle long term. This includes the food you consume everyday, or the workouts you don’t really want to go to but make the a priority even when you’re tired, busy or simply not motivated. Sure, these short term alternatives might be easier and seem to work for a hot second- but are they sustainble for long lasting results? Negative. The best part about this process is that when you do start to look better, feel better and become stronger you know you did everything in your power to get that way AND you are better for it!

Healthy Workplace.

Newtritionsavvy Snack
Happy Tuesday! I have recently started a new job which requires a little bit of effort in the staying healthy department. Alarm clock goes off at 5:45 AM, roll out of bed about 6:15 shower, get ready and before you know it it’s already 7:15AM! I don’t know about you but there is barely any time in the morning to get ready muchless prep my snacks and lunch for the day. You know what this means?? I  have to plan ahead!! I know, I know this freaks some people out, but if you’re not going to meal plan you at least have to pack some snacks that will make it less of a temptation to dig into the usual suspect treats at work. Water, fruit, fresh Suja juice and a good magazine for my downtime are how I can power through the work day. If you are able to take a walk/run during your lunch hour, I highly recommend it. It’s easy for some  to become sedentary when you are sitting behind a desk or stuck in meetings all day. My solution to you is that you MUST make time. 20 min, 30 min, and hour, whatever you can get in for exercise is better than nothing!
I also look for creative inspiration on instagram. Some of my favorite accounts to follow are:

Follow them on Insta!

@WEWORK : they are a coworking company that builds communities to empower people to do what they love. As we grow throughout the world, creative and healthy work spaces .
@wholefoodsmarket: My favorite grocery store providing sustainable & organic food.
@Suja: I love their juices. Usually I make my own, but if I am in a rush I usually pick this one up as my go to!
@classpass: It’s always inspiring for me to see people working out and being motivated. I think that the more we surround ourselves with like minded people the better we will be. Classpass is great- I highly recommend this as a monthly gym pass.

Athleta + Gap Fit Nail it!

Gap Fit Nails it!
Ladies and gentlemen! Let me introduce to you GAP FIT. I know, I know it’s not new to the rest of the world but it’s new to me. I am an avid GAP shopper when it comes to my everyday wear because most of the time the pieces they make will last years. When it comes to workout gear on the other hand, I am not one to branch out and try new brands. The problem with my body is that my legs are skinny, my boobs are big and my waste fits somewhere in between – so when it comes to shopping for athletic wear it’s either too big or barely fits in some areas. Not only is this discouraging but it has prevented me from really giving other brands  a try. Needless to say, I stumbled upon Gap Fit over Christmas while shopping for family and decided I would give it a try. The material they use is similar to that of Lululemon which I am familiar with. I bought a few shirts like the one on the top right (pictured above) and decided to give the crops a try as well. What do you know, they were both great! The prices are reasonable and you are walking away with a great product. Thank you Gap for nailing it once again.
If buying new clothes will get you to the gym then you better get shopping! It’s the second week in January….how are you doing with your healthy makeover?

Half Marthon Done & Done!

{Pre Race}

{After Shot- Don't know how I am standing!!}

{After Shot- Don’t know how I am standing!!}

Ladies and Gentleman- I am happy to report that my half marathon goal of about 2 years is finally complete! It seems like up until now this has been something I have wanted to accomplish but yet I always found a way to make it not happen.  I think it was mostly fear that I let build up in my head, telling myself I wasn’t capable of running this distance. I know for myself, anytime I get nervous or have doubt I want to just back out for fear that I might not succeed. For others, it’s different- if they tell you that you can’t you will do everything in your power to make sure that you do it and you hopefully do it well! I am learning this….slowly but surely. Up until the minute I crossed the start line I was freaking out thinking, “What if I can’t finish????” haha, I am so ridiculous! I started with a great pace and up until about mile 8- I was feeling pretty good. At mile 9-10 my hip flexers started to hurt and I just kept thinking how in the world am I going to finish 3 more miles? Luckily, 10 miles was the turn around so there was some hope- the way back always seems faster than the way up, right? I stopped for water a couple of times between 10-12 (big mistake). My legs were feeling so heavy, but not hamstring heavy, like hip flexer heavy. If you run long distance you know what I am talking about. At mile 12- the last time I stopped was the hardest to get going because my legs just froze. It felt like I was carrying a sand bag on each leg for the entire last mile. My music was blasting but my mind was trippin out- thinking how the hell am I going to finish this last half mile! I kept running, encouraging people to keep going if they were walking because we were right there. THEN, I had to stop and walk again because I had nothing left, literally. There was a man about 50 years old that ran by and said, “let’s go, you’re almost there” and I looked at him practically wanting to cry and told myself it’s 2 more minutes of your life!!!!!!!! I started running again for the last quarter mile (completely power of the mind) and crossed the finish line. I finished with a time of 2:10.

This experience was nothing short of life changing. Not just because I ran 13.1 miles, but because I had no clue how I was going to push through the last 3 miles muchless mile 12. My body was aching- but I just kept saying (as cheesy as it sounds) you can do it- you got this….JUST KEEP GOING! There is no way in hell I would have been able to finish if I didn’t train at all, and now I know next time to run up to 13 and not just 10! The last mile is no joke- your body is in another land and your mind has to be there to tell yourself that you can make it. The man who passsed me and encouraged me to keep going must have been an angel, because I felt like with that little bit of encouragement I HAD to keep running. Another reminder that you never know the impact you’re going to have on someone else’s life. Two days later and I am still completely sore, but I am so happy I did it and can officially say that I have finished my FIRST half marathon. Let the bucket list items continue to check off for 2013.

What I love about Me: Sarah Sotelo

{Tell us something you love about yourself}

I love that I have found my passion at an early age. I made a lifestyle change about 5 years ago and it has forever made me a better person. Little did I know that simply changing the way that I ate and lived life would make me feel better, lose weight, maintain a better attitude and allow myself to be an example for others. I love making a difference in other people’s lives as well as knowing that each person that enters mine is also teaching me some sort of greater lesson. I love that I can see beyond the platform in front of me and look toward the greater good. A happy and healthy lifestyle is a choice, and I am glad I have made the right one.

{What is your favorite physical feature?}

My favorite physical features are my eyes and smile. I think you can tell so much just by looking in someone’s eyes whether it’s truth, love, compassion, or even disappointment. Nothing spells out happiness better than the light in someone’s eyes and the joy in one’s smile.

{What is something you used to dislike about yourself that you have now come to appreciate?}

I used to hate my body. I never did anything to make it better- I worked out only sometimes, ate like crap, drank too much and didn’t really care. I never understood how I didn’t look like the girls in the magazines (which I don’t want to now) and why I was never satisfied.  After a huge transition from college to the “real world” I have noticed a dramatic difference in my body. Like I said before, I made a lifestyle change that has only made me realize we are in full control of the way that we look and view ourselves. I became vegetarian, stopped blaming other people for the way I looked, started making exercise a priority and started forgiving things that have happened in my life and were not going to change the way I viewed my future unless I did. It is an incredible feeling to know that you are in charge of your behavior, and how you react to situations. In 9 years, I have transformed by body to now be completely comfortable who I am – without having to compare myself to others! I am comfortable. I am secure. I am nobody else but Me.

{What is your proudest accomplishment?}

My proudest accomplishment is finishing my Nutrition Education Program. I loved being surrounded by educated people who get it- and won’t settle for anything other than healthy living. I am grateful that this has put me in the direction of my future career. I am also grateful that I work hard and can travel and see other parts of the world.

{Tell us about your style. What type of outfit do you feel the most like yourself in?}

I could live in Lululemon and my Nike Free shoes ALL day every day! (I pretty much do.) What’s wrong with that!? In real life I love to dress comfortable as well as classy. You won’t find me in heels too often because I am 5’8 and feel like I am tall enough! Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to be sexy- throw some heels on with a cute dress here and there, but on an average day, it’s flats, skinny’s, cute shirt with some jewels to finish off the outfit. I love getting ready, and feel that you should always try to look your best when you are in public! (This doesn’t count working out!! )

{List your top three favorite things to do?}

My favorite things to do in life are educate people on living a stronger, happier and motivated life without falling into the day to day norm of others, working out in the gym as well as any outdoor activity and I absolutely love to shop. Nordstrom and Whole foods are by far my favorite stores. I think I go to WF 5 days a week! I have a hard time laying low and doing nothing…If you know me, you know that I am always on the go.

{What makes you the happiest?}

My health, family, friends and puppy make me the happiest. My ideal day includes a great workout, Starbucks coffee or Whole Foods smoothie, a little blog searching and cooking of some kind. I love traveling and learning about new favorite places. So far, NYC  and Paris are my two favorites! I am trying to get better at relaxing and being able to stay still, but this is definitely a work in progress.

{How do you find your motivation to work out?}

My motivation to workout comes from the way that I feel after I do it, and knowing that I am in total control of the way that I look. Seeing the change in my body in the last couple of months has shown me that I am capable of doing things outside the box, such as knowing that I am strong enough and can finish. I am not competitive, but FNS has allowed me to do things I had no clue I could even do (Such as a pull up, tire exercises, and pushups!) Knowing that the workout never gets easier and we just get better motivates me to continue my journey to great physical health. When you are surrounded by positive, like minded people It only drives you to want to be better. I love working out with friends and being held accountable. SO thankful to have stumbled upon this gem.

{How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle between work, school, family and social life?}

To be honest, sometimes it can be hard to balance work, school, family, social life etc. I find that my social life has taken a turn in a different direction. Of course I still like to go out for a drink with friends, but I would much rather save the date for a morning hike and coffee, or farmers market or even an outdoor activity. I guess I can relate this to priorities. When I go out and drink, I hate the way I feel the next day and most weekends it’s just not worth it. I would rather be productive and challenge my body and enjoy the day than be stuck feeling like crap. This allows me to encourage people to want the same, and save the date with me for a healthy meal or hike. After all, you are the company you keep. Family and friends have never been hard to maintain. I enjoy spending time with both, and am a firm believer that we make time for the things that are important to us! We are all busy, but if we want it we will attain it.

{What is your main goal you are reaching towards in the next 6 months, and year?}

I am currently taking classes to complete my Registered Dietician Degree. This is my main priority above all. I started my blog in April with hopes that people can learn what I am about and know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not about being too extreme but rather having balance and enjoying life. Most importantly,  I will show people that living this way is by no means a “have to” but purely a WANT! In the next 6 months I am going to give a small talk/ lecture to family and friends about the importance of taking control of your health. At this point, with our healthcare system and easy accessibility to prescription drugs and profit- I think people need to take responsibility for what they put in their body and how they feel as a result. I will be running my first half marathon in about a month and will continue with FNS. My theme for the year is “Bite the Bullet.” I sometimes think too much before I do something, so I am vowing to myself to just do it.

Thank you for taking the time to read these stories from people who encourage and inspire me on a daily basis. It is much harder to write about yourself than you think. While answering these questions I had to take a second and think of the things that I really value in my life and translate into words what is important to me! I hope this helps you better understand who I am, and what my mission is in life.  I encourage you to write these questions down and answer them yourself. We are all an inspiration to someone in our lives, so use it to the best of your ability.

Here are some of my favorite go to work out items! There is nothing better than feeling good in the clothes you wear while working out. I am obsessed with everything lululemon (but who isn’t these days). The pants fit perfectly, the sports bra is amazing and I love the shorts because they fit my hips and skinny legs just right! I know these can break the pocket book- but if you have money to invest, and are going to put to good use I highly recommend you purchase! There is no turning back! When I don’t feel like spending a lot I head to Old Navy, Gap, and Target for great deals! They are just as good for half the price!
I just purchased the grey and baby blue Nike Free shoes, and let me tell you they are beyond comfortable!
