Sotelo Selfies

So many birthdays this weekend! The Los Gatos Christmas parade was a success! Let’s just say it was packed with people as the whole downtown area shuts down for the festivities. We had a front line view at Oak and Rye and got to stuff our faces with breakfast burritos, breakfast pizza (that wasn’t mine) & a bloody mary! Those pics pretty much sum up my eventful last two days. The holidays and parties can sometimes get us distracted buuutttt I am happy to be the back to the  [ absolutely m u c h- n e e d e d] gym today. Happy Monday!

Hey friends…Happy Tuesday! I feel like the weekend always flies by…oh wait! IT DOES! I had a great weekend combined with both work and a little bit of play time. Although it was a three day weekend for many- in the restaurant business that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a vacation for you (I mean me)! I worked both nights (on the hustle for NYC) but found a couple of hours Sat + Sunday to soak up the sun and enjoy the weekend. Saturday I grabbed coffee at Barefoot Coffee Roasting Company in Campbell. This place has been my hangout as of late. It’s a smaller shop, non corporate and I am all for supporting local businesses that are of quality! When I find time to blog, this is my spot. Sunday I brunched it with a girlfriend at The Table in Willow Glen. This place is one of a kind and reminds me of a restaurant you would more than likely find in San Francisco or NYC. It’s small, the decor is modern and the drinks are beyond fab. We sat at the bar (I prefer) and enjoyed the best Ricotta Pancakes I have ever had. They were filled with a fresh lemon flavor and every bite melted in your mouth. Can we say A-MA-ZING! I am happy to report that I have been working out and eating fab food all week. The pancake might not have helped my Mexico Physique but needless to say the hard work every day allows for a little treat here and there.  I hope you all enjoyed your holiday weekend….despite that niner loss and have a great four days ahead. Positive thoughts!

This weekend was my first visit to Stinson Beach. It was my cousins birthday and instead of doing the traditional dinner and drinks we opted for a more productive birthday including an amazing hike and BBQ. Stinson beach is located in Marin. The drive out is a little far if you have never been there, but when all was said and done it was so worth it. Sometimes it’s nice to change up your gym routine with a little nature exercise. The weather was completely overcast but was perfect for the hike. I highly recommend this place if you have never been! Have a great week everyone!

Half Marthon Done & Done!

{After Shot- Don’t know how I am standing!!}

Ladies and Gentleman- I am happy to report that my half marathon goal of about 2 years is finally complete! It seems like up until now this has been something I have wanted to accomplish but yet I always found a way to make it not happen.  I think it was mostly fear that I let build up in my head, telling myself I wasn’t capable of running this distance. I know for myself, anytime I get nervous or have doubt I want to just back out for fear that I might not succeed. For others, it’s different- if they tell you that you can’t you will do everything in your power to make sure that you do it and you hopefully do it well! I am learning this….slowly but surely. Up until the minute I crossed the start line I was freaking out thinking, “What if I can’t finish????” haha, I am so ridiculous! I started with a great pace and up until about mile 8- I was feeling pretty good. At mile 9-10 my hip flexers started to hurt and I just kept thinking how in the world am I going to finish 3 more miles? Luckily, 10 miles was the turn around so there was some hope- the way back always seems faster than the way up, right? I stopped for water a couple of times between 10-12 (big mistake). My legs were feeling so heavy, but not hamstring heavy, like hip flexer heavy. If you run long distance you know what I am talking about. At mile 12- the last time I stopped was the hardest to get going because my legs just froze. It felt like I was carrying a sand bag on each leg for the entire last mile. My music was blasting but my mind was trippin out- thinking how the hell am I going to finish this last half mile! I kept running, encouraging people to keep going if they were walking because we were right there. THEN, I had to stop and walk again because I had nothing left, literally. There was a man about 50 years old that ran by and said, “let’s go, you’re almost there” and I looked at him practically wanting to cry and told myself it’s 2 more minutes of your life!!!!!!!! I started running again for the last quarter mile (completely power of the mind) and crossed the finish line. I finished with a time of 2:10.

This experience was nothing short of life changing. Not just because I ran 13.1 miles, but because I had no clue how I was going to push through the last 3 miles muchless mile 12. My body was aching- but I just kept saying (as cheesy as it sounds) you can do it- you got this….JUST KEEP GOING! There is no way in hell I would have been able to finish if I didn’t train at all, and now I know next time to run up to 13 and not just 10! The last mile is no joke- your body is in another land and your mind has to be there to tell yourself that you can make it. The man who passsed me and encouraged me to keep going must have been an angel, because I felt like with that little bit of encouragement I HAD to keep running. Another reminder that you never know the impact you’re going to have on someone else’s life. Two days later and I am still completely sore, but I am so happy I did it and can officially say that I have finished my FIRST half marathon. Let the bucket list items continue to check off for 2013.

Running On My Mind

20130125-110706.jpg

Next Sunday, (Superbowl Sunday) I will be running my first half marathon in SF. I attempted to sign up once before (last year) but sprained my ankle weeks before so wasn’t able to run the race. This time- I am ready! I have been training for the last couple of weeks and feel like between FNS and the increased running I have been eating everything in sight (no joke). Lucky for me, I am not really a snack buyer so I am not resorting to unhealthy food. I have been juicing more, making more smoothies with protein powder and cooking in between when I have time…it seems to be helping with my appetite. With the race 9 days away, I will complete a few more short runs and take it easy this weekend. Now I just need to find a cute new top and light jacket for the race. This is probably my favorite part of running a race haha. Lululemon- here I come. Tomorrow, I will be juicing for my fitness friends in hopes that anyone who house doubts of the taste or benefits will be enlightened and incorporate juicing into their diet. Can’t wait for this. Hope you all have a great weekend!

My Life This Week.

SOW

It has been such a great second week of this new year. Sunday I met a girlfriend at Barefoot coffee and ended up sitting for 3 hours talking about life, goals and my upcoming half marathon that I have commited to run February 3 (she was kind enough to write up a training plan). Holy Cow is right….I can’t believe I am actually doing it. This has been something that has been on my radar for a while, but I sprained my ankle before the last one I signed up for so that was a no go. As of Tuesday my 4 week impromptu training has oficially begun. I bought some new shoes- any excuse to buy new workout clothes/shoes sounds like a good one to me. As we know this week I have been doing a juicing series that is hopefully encouraging people to make this habit a part of their weekly routine to staying healthy. Don’t even try to give me an excuse because the benefits outway the time 15 minutes it might take to juice and clean up. Let’s face it, you would probably on Facebook or some social network if you weren’t juicing (truth).

Yesterday I headed up to the city to meet an old classmate of mine for some coffee, and a hike up to Twin Peaks. Coinsidentally, along with the coffe there was a bowl full of fresh juice packed in mason jars on the counter. She said it was her friends company- SoW – they juice in the morning and then drop off at various locations throughout the city! Could this have been any more perfect?? I chose the beet juice which consisted of

  • Red beet
  • Carrot
  • Orange
  • Apple
  • Turmeric

Once again, to my surprise….it was delicious!

Juice and cofee were followed by a great hike (it was a great active rest day…those hills are no joke) that allowed for probably the BEST view of San Francisco. If you haven’t been there, it’s a must! Back to 6 miles today and a great workout at FNS! Hope you all have a great Thursday.

That which you focus your attention on becomes your reality so choose wisely!

What I love about Me: Sarah Sotelo

{Tell us something you love about yourself}

I love that I have found my passion at an early age. I made a lifestyle change about 5 years ago and it has forever made me a better person. Little did I know that simply changing the way that I ate and lived life would make me feel better, lose weight, maintain a better attitude and allow myself to be an example for others. I love making a difference in other people’s lives as well as knowing that each person that enters mine is also teaching me some sort of greater lesson. I love that I can see beyond the platform in front of me and look toward the greater good. A happy and healthy lifestyle is a choice, and I am glad I have made the right one.

{What is your favorite physical feature?}

My favorite physical features are my eyes and smile. I think you can tell so much just by looking in someone’s eyes whether it’s truth, love, compassion, or even disappointment. Nothing spells out happiness better than the light in someone’s eyes and the joy in one’s smile.

{What is something you used to dislike about yourself that you have now come to appreciate?}

I used to hate my body. I never did anything to make it better- I worked out only sometimes, ate like crap, drank too much and didn’t really care. I never understood how I didn’t look like the girls in the magazines (which I don’t want to now) and why I was never satisfied.  After a huge transition from college to the “real world” I have noticed a dramatic difference in my body. Like I said before, I made a lifestyle change that has only made me realize we are in full control of the way that we look and view ourselves. I became vegetarian, stopped blaming other people for the way I looked, started making exercise a priority and started forgiving things that have happened in my life and were not going to change the way I viewed my future unless I did. It is an incredible feeling to know that you are in charge of your behavior, and how you react to situations. In 9 years, I have transformed by body to now be completely comfortable who I am – without having to compare myself to others! I am comfortable. I am secure. I am nobody else but Me.

{What is your proudest accomplishment?}

My proudest accomplishment is finishing my Nutrition Education Program. I loved being surrounded by educated people who get it- and won’t settle for anything other than healthy living. I am grateful that this has put me in the direction of my future career. I am also grateful that I work hard and can travel and see other parts of the world.

{Tell us about your style. What type of outfit do you feel the most like yourself in?}

I could live in Lululemon and my Nike Free shoes ALL day every day! (I pretty much do.) What’s wrong with that!? In real life I love to dress comfortable as well as classy. You won’t find me in heels too often because I am 5’8 and feel like I am tall enough! Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to be sexy- throw some heels on with a cute dress here and there, but on an average day, it’s flats, skinny’s, cute shirt with some jewels to finish off the outfit. I love getting ready, and feel that you should always try to look your best when you are in public! (This doesn’t count working out!! )

{List your top three favorite things to do?}

My favorite things to do in life are educate people on living a stronger, happier and motivated life without falling into the day to day norm of others, working out in the gym as well as any outdoor activity and I absolutely love to shop. Nordstrom and Whole foods are by far my favorite stores. I think I go to WF 5 days a week! I have a hard time laying low and doing nothing…If you know me, you know that I am always on the go.

{What makes you the happiest?}

My health, family, friends and puppy make me the happiest. My ideal day includes a great workout, Starbucks coffee or Whole Foods smoothie, a little blog searching and cooking of some kind. I love traveling and learning about new favorite places. So far, NYC  and Paris are my two favorites! I am trying to get better at relaxing and being able to stay still, but this is definitely a work in progress.

{How do you find your motivation to work out?}

My motivation to workout comes from the way that I feel after I do it, and knowing that I am in total control of the way that I look. Seeing the change in my body in the last couple of months has shown me that I am capable of doing things outside the box, such as knowing that I am strong enough and can finish. I am not competitive, but FNS has allowed me to do things I had no clue I could even do (Such as a pull up, tire exercises, and pushups!) Knowing that the workout never gets easier and we just get better motivates me to continue my journey to great physical health. When you are surrounded by positive, like minded people It only drives you to want to be better. I love working out with friends and being held accountable. SO thankful to have stumbled upon this gem.

{How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle between work, school, family and social life?}

To be honest, sometimes it can be hard to balance work, school, family, social life etc. I find that my social life has taken a turn in a different direction. Of course I still like to go out for a drink with friends, but I would much rather save the date for a morning hike and coffee, or farmers market or even an outdoor activity. I guess I can relate this to priorities. When I go out and drink, I hate the way I feel the next day and most weekends it’s just not worth it. I would rather be productive and challenge my body and enjoy the day than be stuck feeling like crap. This allows me to encourage people to want the same, and save the date with me for a healthy meal or hike. After all, you are the company you keep. Family and friends have never been hard to maintain. I enjoy spending time with both, and am a firm believer that we make time for the things that are important to us! We are all busy, but if we want it we will attain it.

{What is your main goal you are reaching towards in the next 6 months, and year?}

I am currently taking classes to complete my Registered Dietician Degree. This is my main priority above all. I started my blog in April with hopes that people can learn what I am about and know that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not about being too extreme but rather having balance and enjoying life. Most importantly,  I will show people that living this way is by no means a “have to” but purely a WANT! In the next 6 months I am going to give a small talk/ lecture to family and friends about the importance of taking control of your health. At this point, with our healthcare system and easy accessibility to prescription drugs and profit- I think people need to take responsibility for what they put in their body and how they feel as a result. I will be running my first half marathon in about a month and will continue with FNS. My theme for the year is “Bite the Bullet.” I sometimes think too much before I do something, so I am vowing to myself to just do it.

Thank you for taking the time to read these stories from people who encourage and inspire me on a daily basis. It is much harder to write about yourself than you think. While answering these questions I had to take a second and think of the things that I really value in my life and translate into words what is important to me! I hope this helps you better understand who I am, and what my mission is in life.  I encourage you to write these questions down and answer them yourself. We are all an inspiration to someone in our lives, so use it to the best of your ability.

A Couple Snaps of the Week.

It has been crazy busy work week this week- that hardly left time for anything in between. I was only able to get one day of FNS in (going today) but happy that it is FRIDAY! I love being busy, but sometimes you lose track of your daily regimen when you only have time to work and sleep. Coffee, food and not enough hours in the day seemed to be the theme of this week. Today leaves time for a day off, errands and catching up on much needed exercise. I am headed to a music festival tonight that should result in good pictures/people watching. I hope you all have a great weekend, catch up on sleep and remain productive!

Be the person you were too busy to be yesterday!

Outside Lands – Day 1.

Outside Lands Festival Day 1. Freezing Weather, So many people, Passion Pit, Big Boi, Metallica all to keep us going. Despite the weather it was sooo much fun. I have been once before two years ago and this year was just as good. I love this festival because it’s a break from all the music we hear over, and over on the radio.The crowd was just as diverse as the music- and it is in Golden Gate Park. What’s not to love?? My favorites for day 1 were Big Boi (singing a few oldies but goodies) and Passion Pit.  I’m not a huge fan of metal music, but went to Metallica because it’s Metallica!!! The energy and excitement everyone had made me wish I liked Metal a littttle bit more! They topped off with Fireworks and called it a night. I’ll post some Day 2 pictures tomorrow. Hope your weekend was as good as mine…Happy Monday!
