I love the idea of smoothies because you can pretty much add anything you want, blend and go. I know sometimes it seems easier to just buy one but if you’re like me and love Whole Foods smoothies, well- they can add up! $7 a day x let’s say 3 a week x 4 weeks is $84 that you could have spent somewhere else! I love to add super foods like chia seeds, flax seeds, powder, raw cacao powder, protein powders (vega one is my favorite/it’s vegan) or even greens like kale and spinach that I might not have time to eat during the day. We are all busy so plan ahead and it will make healthy eating a little bit easier. What are some of your favorite smoothie recipes?

Who’s Ready To Juice?
New Year….”new diet” seems to be all the rage these last 4 days. How about we make it all the rage 365 days a year? How does this happen? We start now! I just ordered this book, “Crazy, Sexy, Kitchen” and can’t wait to start sharing with you these amazing recipes that will transform our health together. Next week I will be doing a juicing series. This is something that is new to me as well. I am familar with smoothies (no not the chocolate milkshake from In & Out kind of smoothie), but fruits and superfood kind of smoothies (chia seeds, flax seeds, kale etc). I can’t wait to change up my routine and start experimenting with the benefits of juicing! If you don’t like to cook leafy greens and vegetables- then this is might be an easier route for you to follow. Who’s ready to spike their drinks with loads of vitamins??

Learn To Love Kale…Your Body Will Thank You.
I can’t tell you how many times I hear people say, “Oh that’s too healthy!” I am baffled because on the contrary I bet if you were to ask these same people how satisfied they are with their bodies- they would probably be on the lower side on the scale from 1-10. I think in any aspect of life, sometimes you have to train your body to learn to love certain things. It’s not like I wake up every single day of my life excited to workout (let’s get real). Sometimes I am so sore or just tired that I would rather not- but I know when I finish a great workout I never wanted to start it is the best feeling in the world. Where am I going with this? If you would have told me 4 years ago I would love Kale I would have told you that you were NUTS! In the last 8 months (hard to believe) I have been a part of a workout community that has changed my body in ways I never knew were possible. With that said, protien is extremely important in the recovery process because it supplies your body with structural components known as amino acids, which are vital to improving your body composition. As a vegetarian people always ask the common question, “How do you get your protein?” I have never once heard of a protein deficiency- but with that said it is important to have a well balanced diet w/ or w/o meat. And don’t be fooled, if you aren’t eating sustainable meat, chances are your source/benefits of protein might be in question as well.
When I find new products I sometimes become obsessed and them stop using them months down the road. I love new (I need to work on this!) I just bought this protein powder again and am ready to tackle the necessities that go with compeleting a great workout. It’s a new year and I can’t wait to see my body change even more. If you hate kale you can always add to any smoothie. The smoothie can include anything- I usually add kale, raspberries, strawberries, a banana and a little orange juice. If it’s too tart I will add a drop of agave just for a natural sweet. Don’t knock it before you try it.
Why Kale?
-Most highly nutritious vegetable
– Excellent source of Vitamin C, B6 and Manganese
-Great source of dietary fiber
-Anti Cancer Properties

Starbucks Makes a Healthy Switch
I went to Starbucks today for my usual cup of Joe and noticed some changes in the refrigerator section. There was no longer a supply of Naked Juices, but rather a new juice and smoothie brand called Evolution Fresh. Immediately I picked one up to check the nutrition label and it was much better than the Naked brand that was their previous supplier- less sugar, packaged cold and all fresh ingredients. For those of you that don’t know it’s no surprise as Naked is owned by Pepsi. When I heard this I about freaked because I don’t think people should support large corporations that provide food and drink items that are causing harm to our society! Yes, people can make their own choices, but from the perspective of someone wishes for everyone to make good choices, this is alarming. After doing some research, I found that Starbucks purchased Evolution Fresh last November and recently made the switch in the retail store.
Evolution foods provides a product that is HPP (high pressure pasteurization). This technique allows the liquid to be pasteurized in the bottle using little to no heat, maintaining the juice’s nutritional value as well as prolonging the shelf life. Other juices like Naked and Odwalla uses a technique called Flash Pasteurization, which uses high temperature heat for 15 – 30 seconds to kill off bacteria and microorganisms. The main difference would be the use of heat to pasteurize the beverage, as flash pasteurization’s use of heat may slightly shorten the juice’s shelf life and also cause the loss of some vitamins.
“We believe in following nature’s lead. We’re not taking credit for what’s been perfected, just making it a little easier to get. We cold-press and squeeze whole fruits and vegetables in our juicery every day, to bring you juices alive with vitality and full of what nature intended. You deserve to drink something you feel good about, because it makes you feel good. Here’s to your vibrant energy, it’s your time to thrive!”
