Athleta + Gap Fit Nail it!

Gap Fit Nails it!
Ladies and gentlemen! Let me introduce to you GAP FIT. I know, I know it’s not new to the rest of the world but it’s new to me. I am an avid GAP shopper when it comes to my everyday wear because most of the time the pieces they make will last years. When it comes to workout gear on the other hand, I am not one to branch out and try new brands. The problem with my body is that my legs are skinny, my boobs are big and my waste fits somewhere in between – so when it comes to shopping for athletic wear it’s either too big or barely fits in some areas. Not only is this discouraging but it has prevented me from really giving other brands  a try. Needless to say, I stumbled upon Gap Fit over Christmas while shopping for family and decided I would give it a try. The material they use is similar to that of Lululemon which I am familiar with. I bought a few shirts like the one on the top right (pictured above) and decided to give the crops a try as well. What do you know, they were both great! The prices are reasonable and you are walking away with a great product. Thank you Gap for nailing it once again.
If buying new clothes will get you to the gym then you better get shopping! It’s the second week in January….how are you doing with your healthy makeover?

Baby Steps

20130218-134111.jpg

Spring is right around the corner which means bikini season will be here before we know it! What does this mean for me? I’m changing some things up. I already eat pretty healthy, but I won’t lie, there is the occasional alcohol beverage and Starbucks that could probably be left out. I’m making a promise to myself to lose some body fat in the next couple of months and start seeing some definition in my body. I have been working my ass off to be where I am at now- but know that with a few more changes I can reach my personal goal. What do these changes entail? Eating enough food (sometimes challenging between work and school), no alcohol, more protein shakes post workout, adding running in between FNS workouts. Feeling better is just the beginning, this in turn results in looking better. Figure out what you love about your body, and what you don’t. Make some changes. Baby steps in time turn out to be the leaps and results we wish to acquire. You can’t see any results if you never try! Stop making excuses as to why you’re not your best. Go ahead, what are you waiting for?

Running On My Mind

20130125-110706.jpg

Next Sunday, (Superbowl Sunday) I will be running my first half marathon in SF. I attempted to sign up once before (last year) but sprained my ankle weeks before so wasn’t able to run the race. This time- I am ready! I have been training for the last couple of weeks and feel like between FNS and the increased running I have been eating everything in sight (no joke). Lucky for me, I am not really a snack buyer so I am not resorting to unhealthy food. I have been juicing more, making more smoothies with protein powder and cooking in between when I have time…it seems to be helping with my appetite. With the race 9 days away, I will complete a few more short runs and take it easy this weekend. Now I just need to find a cute new top and light jacket for the race. This is probably my favorite part of running a race haha. Lululemon- here I come. Tomorrow, I will be juicing for my fitness friends in hopes that anyone who house doubts of the taste or benefits will be enlightened and incorporate juicing into their diet. Can’t wait for this. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Strawberry Santa’s…I Want!

Who can believe the it’s the Friday before Christmas and the world DIDN’T end!??? No way! We are all still alive, which means the holiday is right around the corner. I haven’t finished all of my Christmas shopping yet….that would be too smart! Have you guys figured out what you are making to eat on Christmas? I am in the process – will let you know Monday. I want to mention this week has been nothing short of F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S! The energy as well as the team work  at the gym has been through the roof. The gym is closed this next week so everyone is committed to getting their last workouts of the year in at FNS. Work has been great, another example that when you are kind to people they reward you in return and last but not least Whole Foods tweeted me this week! Call me a nerd but I was quite excited to see they asked me what my favorite Whole Foods item is? I have to go with the make your own peanut butter and the WF brand jalapeno hummus. So good! On that note, good luck with the last minute tackling the malls, crowds and have a great weekend everyone!

What’s Your Healthy Darrin Domingo?

{Darrin Domingo}

{What Drives you to be Healthy?}

Both of my parents have had cancer.  My mom’s father died of emphysema and my dad’s dad died from cancer.  I always told myself that if i get cancer, or have a heart attack…it will NOT be my fault.  I know the secret to living a healthy life; eat healthy the majority of the time and work out consistently hard.  Aren’t I a genius?? Not really.  I’m just not lazy like others choose to be and then they ask why they’re overweight or why they’re unhealthy.  What you put into your body is YOUR choice.  Whether or not you wake up and put in the effort everyday to exercise is YOUR choice. I personally choose to be healthy and then I get of my ass and do something about it.

4 Healthy Snacks:

{Sabra hummus w/ mini carrots}

*Protein and Fiber and it’s delicious.

{Organic Peanut Butter/ Wheat toast w/ Organic Wildflower Honey}

*Makes me feel like I’m cheating when I’m not.  It also reminds me of when I was a kid and would eat peanut butter every day.

{Hard Boiled Eggs}

*No nonsense protein. Always followed by some gum if im going to be engaging in conversation with other human beings.

{Zico chocolate Coconut Water}

*Zico chocolate Coconut Water +  Cytofuse Vanilla Protein Powder in a ‘blender bottle’ = ridiculously good.

Favorite Cheat Snacks…

{Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Or Pizza}

*Krispy Kream doughnuts or Pizza.  I’ll eat 6 donuts or 6 slices in a sitting without hesitation.  My cheat meals are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Wednesday because I’m halfway there and I’m human & Saturday because I kicked so much ass all week and worked out like an animal every day, sometimes twice a day, and dammit I deserve every last unhealthy, fattening calorie and I will not apologize for it or hide it.

Favorite Recipe…

{Spinach & Potato Frittata}
I make this pretty much every single weekend for breakfast or some variation of it.

  • Handful of spinach
  • Cup of diced potato
  • 6 eggs
Saute spinach in olive oil, then throw in potatoes.  Brown the potatoes in the pan.  Meanwhile preheat oven to 375 degrees F.  Whisk eggs in a separate bowl then pour into pan and spread out evenly.  Use salt and pepper to taste. Place entire pan into oven and bake until eggs are fluffy.

Thank you, Darrin!

What I love about Me: Nicole McAleavey.

{Tell us something you love about yourself.}

I love my dedication and follow through. Whether it was by studying dance for 10 + years and achieving my optimal artistic expression (well optimal at that time, as we are always growing) or venturing more recently into a new nursing career path, when I put my mind to something I do it, and with all of my heart.

{ What is your favorite physical feature?}

My favorite physical feature is my smile. Nothing quite compares to how a genuine smile makes not only other people feel, but the person who is smiling as well.  I am talking about the kind of smile felt from the inside and then radiates out.

{What is something you used to dislike about yourself that you have now come to appreciate?}

I used to dislike my butt. Like most pre-pubescent girls, body image was not really on my radar and I pretty much ate whatever I wanted.  As I entered 8th grade, so did my newly acquired or should I say transformed rear. I can now honestly and thankfully say I am out of the “lets tie a sweater around my waist” phase and I will never have to buy padded booty jeans!

{What is your proudest accomplishment?}

Two of my proudest accomplishments thus far: being invited to join an eight member dance company and dance along side my mentors, and getting into every nursing school I applied to.

{Tell us about your style. What type of outfit do you feel the most like yourself in?}

My style ranges from boho to simple and classic with some great vintage finds. Lace and faux fur are some of my favorite textures and I love to throw in some bright colors/prints and of course jewelry…big jewelry girl.

{List your top three favorite things to do?}

Top 3 favorite things to do and in no particular order: workout/ be active outdoors, photography (or anything I can do to channel my artistic energy), and travel.

{What makes you the happiest?}

What makes me the happiest is knowing I may have helped make someone’s day just a little bit better. Whether it be by smiling at a stranger,offering a listening ear to a friend in need, or being the sounding board to a frustrated patient in the hospital, it’s the little things that can have the most profound effects.

{How do you find your motivation to workout?}

I find my motivation to work out in the knowing how I feel not only after my workout, but also during. There are those times when your fatigue level is high, but when you feel that chill and KEEP going, you have several realizations with yourself: You are stronger than you think you are and your growth potential is limitless. The euphoria and energy I get post workout and through the rest of the day is addictive and keeps me coming back for more. And last, but certainly not least, being a part of a supportive fitness community has played an essential role, so thank you to all of the team and members of FNS!

{How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle between work, school, family, social life etc.?}

For me a healthy lifestyle is one of balance, however to play hard most of us have to work hard which doesn’t always leave a lot of time for other things. With that said, we make time for the things that are important to us. Now that school has begun, maintaining this balance will be challenging at times but not impossible. It is about prioritization and time management. The better I manage my time the more of my time I have to fill with family, friends, and other hobbies. In turn, I am happier and being in the right state of mind I am able to work harder. It is like a big feedback loop; manage time, have more time for family, friends/”me”, I feel balanced, I work harder!

{What is your main goal you are reaching towards in the next 6 months?}

Right now, my main priority is launching my nursing career and in the next six months be the best nursing student I can be.

Mission Peak Hike….Check!

As part of the September checklist challenge for FNS, I officially completed the Mission Peak Hike in Fremont. I had no idea how high this hike was, nor how steep. All I knew was that I needed sunscreen because it wasn’t shaded. My sudo brother in law was kind enough to tag along (without knowing anything about the hike.) We made it to the first peak- and he was like what the heck did I get myself into? Needless to say, I just kept saying, “We can do it!” I think once you get half way, it’s all mental.  My calves were so sore from the stairs I ran Friday, but I pushed through and climbed to the top. If you have a chance….check this one off your bucket list. SO worth it!

Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

A Couple Snaps of the Week.

It has been crazy busy work week this week- that hardly left time for anything in between. I was only able to get one day of FNS in (going today) but happy that it is FRIDAY! I love being busy, but sometimes you lose track of your daily regimen when you only have time to work and sleep. Coffee, food and not enough hours in the day seemed to be the theme of this week. Today leaves time for a day off, errands and catching up on much needed exercise. I am headed to a music festival tonight that should result in good pictures/people watching. I hope you all have a great weekend, catch up on sleep and remain productive!

Be the person you were too busy to be yesterday!

{New York Bound}

Happy Monday!  It was a jam packed weekend full of birthdays and BBQ’s! Saturday my niece turned 16! It’s time like these when you say, where did the time go??! The party was Hawaiian theme so the leis, BBQ, and family were in full force. Sunday was the first of many (I’m sure) FNS BBQ’s! It was so nice to see everyone out and about, in real life, not just when we are up at the crack of dawn at 6 AM getting our workout on. Great food, paddle boarding, volleyball and some good conversation kept us all entertained. There’s nothing like being surrounded by postive people, who are like minded and share in a common goal for maintaining a healthy lifestyle! Glad to be apart of this group of people. I can’t wait until the next one! Last but not least, I booked an upcoming trip to NY at the end of  September! Can we say exciiiiiiiiited!!!!!! Woohoo! A great way to start the week….hard to top this off! 🙂

Whether you think you can, or can’t…..YOU ARE RIGHT!

Here are some of my favorite go to work out items! There is nothing better than feeling good in the clothes you wear while working out. I am obsessed with everything lululemon (but who isn’t these days). The pants fit perfectly, the sports bra is amazing and I love the shorts because they fit my hips and skinny legs just right! I know these can break the pocket book- but if you have money to invest, and are going to put to good use I highly recommend you purchase! There is no turning back! When I don’t feel like spending a lot I head to Old Navy, Gap, and Target for great deals! They are just as good for half the price!
I just purchased the grey and baby blue Nike Free shoes, and let me tell you they are beyond comfortable!
